The Sudan-Norway Academic Cooperation (SNAC)

The Malak Foundation is excited to share a remarkable opportunity for PhD holders impacted by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The Sudan-Norway Academic Cooperation (SNAC) initiative, funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Khartoum, aims to provide substantial support and foster academic collaboration between Sudanese and Norwegian scholars.

Overview of SNAC

Launched in December 2022, SNAC is a comprehensive program designed to enhance research capacities and academic resilience among Sudanese scholars who have been affected by the conflict. The initiative spans four years, concluding in December 2026, and is part of a broader effort by Norway to support Sudan's academic and political development amidst the ongoing turmoil (CMI - Chr. Michelsen Institute) (Norgesportalen).

Objectives and Benefits

SNAC focuses on several key objectives:

  1. Capacity Building: The program aims to strengthen research skills and academic networks for Sudanese PhD holders. This includes workshops, training sessions, and collaborative research projects with Norwegian institutions.

  2. Research Funding: Providing financial support for research projects that address critical issues in Sudan, such as conflict resolution, governance, and public health.

  3. Exchange Programs: Facilitating academic exchanges and fellowships, allowing Sudanese scholars to work and study in Norway, thereby gaining valuable international experience and exposure.

  4. Institutional Support: Assisting Sudanese universities in rebuilding and enhancing their research infrastructure and capabilities.

Eligibility and Application Process

PhD holders who have been directly affected by the conflict in Sudan are encouraged to apply. The program is open to scholars across various disciplines, particularly those whose work addresses the pressing challenges faced by Sudan. Interested candidates can apply through the official SNAC portal, where detailed guidelines and requirements are provided (CMI - Chr. Michelsen Institute) (CMI - Chr. Michelsen Institute).

Impact and Future Prospects

The SNAC initiative not only aims to support individual scholars but also seeks to contribute to the broader goal of rebuilding Sudan's academic landscape. By fostering international collaboration and providing critical resources, SNAC is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of Sudanese academics and the communities they serve.

This program represents a beacon of hope for many Sudanese scholars who have faced significant disruptions in their academic and professional lives due to the war. By participating in SNAC, these scholars can continue their vital work, contribute to the reconstruction of their country, and strengthen ties between Sudan and Norway (CMI - Chr.
