Celebrating Resilience African Born Australian Athletes

Congratulations to African Born Paralympic Athletes

At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, athletes from around the world are inspiring us with their incredible stories of resilience, determination, and triumph. Among these remarkable individuals are several African-born Australian athletes, each representing a powerful story of overcoming adversity and excelling at the highest level of competition. Here are some of the athletes who are making waves on the world stage:

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Alex Saffy
Born in South Africa, Alex Saffy, fondly known as the "Bunbury Bullet," moved to Western Australia in 2013. Diagnosed with dyskinetic cerebral palsy, Alex transitioned from able-bodied swimming to Para-swimming, and his determination and focus quickly paid off. After an impressive international debut in 2022, where he claimed a bronze medal at the World Championships and silver at the Commonwealth Games, Alex secured another bronze in 2023. With his sights set on Paris, he continues to rise as one of Para-swimming’s brightest stars.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Alissa Jordaan
Alissa Jordaan, born in South Africa and raised in Australia, has been a trailblazer in athletics since her early years. She took the international stage by storm, winning gold and two silvers at the 2017 World Junior Para Athletics Championships. In 2021, Alissa set an Australian record in the T47 400m, and her incredible performance saw her reaching the finals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. With her unwavering dedication, Alissa is continuing to push boundaries and inspire as a leading sprinter on the global stage.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Katja Dedekind
Another extraordinary athlete, Katja Dedekind, was born in South Africa and raised in Queensland, Australia. Katja’s debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympics was a memorable one, as she claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke S13. At Tokyo 2020, she cemented her status as a force in Para-swimming, winning two more bronze medals, including setting a new Australian record in the 400m freestyle S13. With each race, Katja showcases the strength of her spirit and her commitment to excellence in the pool.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Mischa Ginns
Mischa Ginns, born in South Africa, moved to Australia in 2008 and found her life changed following a spinal injury in 2012. After years of rehabilitation, she discovered a newfound passion for badminton, a sport where she has quickly made her mark. Competing at the 2024 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, Mischa's journey to Paris highlights her unyielding resilience and determination to thrive, both on and off the court. Her story serves as an inspiration for anyone seeking to overcome life’s challenges and engage in the power of sport.

🇿🇦 🇦🇺 Jeremy Peacock
Born prematurely with hemiplegia cerebral palsy in South Africa, Jeremy Peacock’s journey to the Paralympics began in Victoria, Australia. Inspired by the perseverance of other Paralympic athletes, Jeremy started competing in Para-triathlons in 2017. In 2022, he made his international debut, securing third place in the PTS4 classification at the World Championships. With four Oceania titles to his name, Jeremy is ready to take on the challenge of Paris 2024, pushing boundaries in Para-triathlon with each competition.
