War in Sudan Explained

Disagreements between Burhan and Hemeti on the terms of the power-sharing deal and the role of the RSF caused a rift. This ultimately led to the current conflict between the two men, resulting in widespread violence, casualties, and mass displacement of civilians. Ceasefires have been repeatedly broken, and peace talks have made little progress.

Following the outbreak of hostilities on 15 April 2023, more than half of the population requires humanitarian assistance and protection. The conflict has resulted in large-scale displacement and shattered access to food, water, cash, fuel, health care and other basic services for millions of people. High insecurity and looting of humanitarian assets and offices have compromised humanitarian access to key locations.

The future of Sudan remains uncertain as the war between Burhan and Hemeti continues to tear the country apart.

Information for the Sudanese Australian community

This package of information has been prepared by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to address issues raised by representatives of the Sudanese Australian community in a virtual roundtable discussion held with Minister Giles on 26 May 2023. We encourage the community to continue to engage with the CLO Network in all states and territories.
